Mark Kinzly from the Harm Reduction Coalition will be flying down for this training. Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies to reduce negative consequences of drug use and improve the quality of the client’s life. The harm reduction approach incorporates a spectrum of strategies which include safer and managed use, as well as abstinence. This approach helps providers effectively meet their clients where they’re at. Participants who attend this training will: understand the principles of harm reduction, participate in activities designed to assist them in exploring attitudes and beliefs about harm reduction, and develop practical skills and interventions that can be used in their work with substance users.

Join Anthony Fauci, MD, director of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation; HIV scientist and clinician, Kenneth Mayer, MD, of Brown University; Mark Harrington, executive director of the Treatment Action Group; and other experts to discuss new scientific opportunities and urgent political strategies to reverse the course of the HIV and TB epidemics and the consequences of reduced funding. The presentations coincide with the release of a special May 2010 supplement of the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, which focuses on the scope of HIV and TB globally and showcases advances in diagnostics, treatment, and prevention.

Free Training: HIV Meds & Street drugs and Outreach to Crack and Methamphetamine Users
Thursday, September 24th, 10am-4pm
Prevention Works!
2501 Benning Rd NE

This is part of our series of trainings facilitated by technical experts from the Harm Reduction Coalition in New York. The description is as follows:

HIV Meds and Street Drugs
In this current "abstinence only" culture, there has been minimal research conducted on how street drugs and HIV medications interact. This half-day course will take an honest look at how ecstasy, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines can potentially have a negative interaction with HIV/AIDS medications. This course is a must for HIV/AIDS case managers!

Outreach to Crack and Methamphetamine Users
This workshop will demonstrate and discuss the techniques for working with crack and meth users, a community of people traditionally neglected by service agencies. This workshop will focus on specific outreach tools, materials, and harm reduction tactics that have been successful with this "hard to reach" population. Attendees will leave this training with practical ideas and skills that they can apply to their own setting and the people they work with.

Spaces are limited! To reserve a space, please email Mary Beth Levin (mlevin@preventionworksdc.org).
